Turning Point Programs Offered Over Zoom in July

Kansas City, Kan. — To ensure the safety of their participants, Turning Point is offering the following programs by Zoom currently.

Upcoming programs in July

  • Program date: Monday, July 6 • 1-2 p.m.

    Instructor: Cathy Glennon, RN, MHS, OCN, NE-BC

    Description: Sleep is important to healing and recovery, but struggling with good sleep is common. Come to this interactive class for tips and information about how to improve sleep quality and why sleep is so important!

  • Class date: Monday, July 6 • 2:30-3:30 p.m.

    Instructor: Cathy Glennon, RN, MHS, OCN, NE-BC

    Description: Are you experiencing numbness, tingling and pain in your hands or feet? Find out more about ways to overcome safety issues involved with peripheral neuropathy and approaches that encourage greater participation in daily life.

  • Class dates: Mondays, July 6-27 • 7-8:30 p.m.

    Instructor: Sarah Fremerman Aptilon, PhD

    Description: For all of us, the personal uncertainty of this moment in history also brings an opportunity to leave old assumptions and habits behind. Each of the 4 sessions in this workshop will consist of a brief introduction and 30 minutes of meditation, followed by sharing and reflection. The Japanese Zen concepts of heart-mind, no-thought, impermanence and entrusting will help us to integrate meditation practice into daily life. Beginners as well as experienced meditators are welcome.

    Description: In the activity and challenges of life, a moment of pause can activate empowerment. Come “pause” with us for quiet reflection, journaling and mutual support. Take these moments to leave concerns at the door, align with yourself, allow insights and be ready to step forward with refreshed awareness. You will also try simple ways to pause throughout your day, which will allow you to be more present in your life.

    Instructor: Olivia Desmarais, BSN, RN, CCRN, Trauma Injury Prevention Education Specialist

    Description: Every 11 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall. Falls are preventable! The first half hour of class will provide practical tips and resources to keep you safe and the second half of class will be an exercise portion to help build balance, strength and flexibility.

    Instructor: Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, PhD, CPT, 2009-2013 Poet Laureate Emeritus of Kansas, author of 19 books

    Description: Writing is a practice that helps us integrate our thoughts, feelings, reactions, dreams and circumstances. Writing in a community also helps us develop a deep kinship with others. In this Zoom-based writing workshop, we’ll write toward greater wholeness while delighting in one another’s discoveries and words. A handout will be emailed to participants ahead of time. Participants need internet access and a device to participate. A computer or tablet is preferred, but phones can work, too.

    Description: If you are remembering your dreams more frequently or having more intense or vivid dreams, you are not alone. Stress is shown to cause an increase in strange imagery and emotional intensity. For many of us, not waking up to a regular alarm clock enhances dream recall, as well as more time in bed. We will look at Carl Jung’s 4-step process for dream interpretation and websites and blogs regarding COVID-related dreams. We’ll discuss how you can use your dreams to process your emotions.

    Description: The paradox of our current relationship with food is that we obsess about nutrition and weight but are less present for the mealtime experience itself. Our routine mindset has us rushing through meals and eating on autopilot. Slowing down and bringing more attention and intention (mindfulness) to our food world can help us shift gears, embrace food as a gift, aid digestion, manage weight and feel more nourished on multiple levels. Please register for each session you plan to attend.

    Description: With illness, what is the difference between feeling down and facing real depression? In either case, what can you do to feel better? This class will help you better understand the causes of depression and uncover the best solutions to help you and your loved ones.

  • Class dates: Thursdays, July 9-30 • 2:30-4 p.m.

    Instructor: Lisa Pinsker, MA, Owner of Mindfulness Matters

    Description: This 4-part series will explore mindfulness. What is it? What are the benefits? What’s fact and what’s hype? We’ll sample and discuss a variety of practices, investigating how to bring mindfulness into daily life to decrease physical or psychological symptoms and improve your quality of life.

  • Class dates: Fridays, July 10 and 17 • 9:30-11 a.m.

    Instructors: Pat Durkin, MS, and Maggie Mosher, MSSL

    Description: We will take 1-2 lines from a favorite poem and use these words in our poem creation. Bring a favorite poem or lines from a poem. Come join us to play with this poetry writing form created by Terrance Hayes.

Upcoming programs for families and children

  • Series dates: Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 • 12:30-1:30 p.m.

    Instructor: Susan Rieger, Certified Yoga Teacher

    Description: Join us online via Zoom and take a magic carpet ride into the night sky. We will learn poses from nature and use our imagination to visit many beautiful vacation spots. These classes are for children and the grown-ups in their life, however, adult participation is not required. It is helpful to have a yoga mat or a beach towel on hand. Attend any or all sessions, but please register for those you plan to attend. Information to access the online program will be provided upon registration.

  • Series dates: Tuesdays, July 7, 21, Aug. 4 • 10-10:45 a.m.

    Instructor: Annie Seal, MS, CCLS, Turning Point’s Children’s Program Director

    Description: Join Annie for story time, where she will read a children’s book and provide an activity to help deal with the emotions of this uncertain time. Even though we can’t be together in person, we can still share in fun and creativity. Information to access the online program will be provided upon registration.

  • Class date: Wednesday, July 8 • Noon-1 p.m.

    Instructor: James (Jamie) Copaken, LSCSW

    Description: Kids ask tough questions. And they keep things inside. How do you unlock what they’re thinking and not telling you? How do you explain things that are hard for us adults to understand? Join us via Zoom and get ideas and answers from the experts – including your peers – on helping kids open up and be supported through the journey of a family member’s illness. Information to access the online program will be provided upon registration.

    Description: Join others to hear how they respond to the emotional roller coaster that being a supporter brings and learn practical ways to manage the feelings that go with it. Topics include riding the emotional roller coaster, factors of resilience and the importance of self-care.
