Those in the southwestern part of the metro could also choose to visit Olathe Health Johnson County Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, a part of The University of Kansas Health System, at 20920 W. 151st St., Suite 100, Olathe, KS 66061. Walk in without an appointment Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Patients who have open fractures, serious lacerations or finger amputations should go straight to an emergency department. Also note that medication refills are not available at the walk-in clinics.
Year-round weekday walk-in orthopedic care
No appointment is needed to get treatment for any acute orthopedic injury, including sports-related injuries, for those 5 years old and above. Injuries treated include:
- Bone fractures
- Dislocations
- Joint injuries
- Sprains
- Strains
Patients are seen by an advanced practice provider, and follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed with orthopedic and/or sports medicine physicians and surgeons.
Seasonal Saturday morning sports medicine walk-in care
Fall sports sometimes lead to sports injuries. From August 31 to November 16, we offer walk-in care for sports injuries Saturday mornings from 8-11 a.m.
No appointment or referral is necessary. Patients will be treated on a first-come, first-served basis by the same sports medicine experts who care for the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals and Current.
"There are a lot of events on Thursday and Friday and sometimes athletes can’t come in during the week,” says David Smith, MD. “Saturday morning at 8 o’clock we’re waiting for them. We have an X-ray tech, a physician and clinical staff. And we can take care of almost any injury, including concussions.”
On Saturdays, a sports medicine physician will evaluate, diagnose and treat sports injuries for middle school, high school and adult athletes, including:
- Acute sports injuries
- Bone fractures
- Joint injuries
- Sport-related concussions
- Sprains
- Strains
In addition, our sports medicine physicians will treat acute orthopedic injuries that are not sports-related. If needed, a follow-up appointment can be scheduled with the appropriate physician or therapist.
After 11 a.m. on Saturdays, patients with a sports injury will be seen by the experts at the orthopedic same-day care clinic, who can treat sprains, strains and fractures, among other things. However, please note that sport-related concussions are only seen between 8-11 a.m. at the Saturday morning sports medicine clinic.
What if an injury happens when the clinic is closed?
The University of Kansas Health System has partnered with HURT!, a mobile application you can access after hours to get free injury advice from orthopedic specialists. Go to PoweredByHurt.com/KansasHealthSystem and download the application to your mobile phone on iOS or Android. Once registered, you can send photos, videos and messages to a HURT! orthopedic specialist and get a response within minutes. The HURT! experts will assess your situation and advise appropriate follow-up care with a network partner, a walk-in care location or an ER. Your information may be shared with the health system, and an orthopedic scheduler will contact you to make an appointment during business hours.
No medical advice or treatment is given via the app. HURT! links you with an orthopedic specialist in minutes to help you assess the severity of your injury, navigate the best option or book a follow-up with a qualified specialist near you. Please keep in mind that when using HURT! you are not communicating with health system employees. Nothing you share in the app will appear in MyChart or your medical records. Learn more about after-hours injury guidance with the HURT! app.
