Health System Named the Official Healthcare Provider of the Current

Kansas City Current soccer players celebrating

November 28, 2023

Kansas City, Kan. — The Kansas City Current has selected The University of Kansas Health System to be their official healthcare provider, effective at the start of the 2024 season. As part of this partnership, health system physicians and clinical staff will provide care for the team on the field and off.

The Current has become a national and international leader in women’s professional sports, not only for their incredible talent on the pitch but also for their commitment to changing the approach to professional women’s sports. By building the first soccer stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team in the world, the Current is supporting their female athletes and demonstrating dedication to their craft. We feel the same way about providing leading-edge care to our patients with state-of-the-art facilities and groundbreaking approaches.

“We are thrilled to partner with The University of Kansas Health System,” said Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long. “As one of the leaders nationally in working with elite athletes, the health system is a tremendous fit for the Kansas City Current as we continue our organization’s quest to build the best women’s soccer club in the world. Most specifically, the health system shares our philosophy which focuses on being player-first and importantly, the health system has an incredibly deep level of expertise in every layer of health care that our players need to excel. At our world-class training complex, CPKC Stadium and in every environment, we can’t wait for our players to benefit from their capabilities.”

That expertise has been developed over years of experience and partnership with other athletic organizations.

“The health system has demonstrated leadership in sports medicine as the official healthcare provider to athletic organizations at every level of play,” said Bob Page, president and CEO. “Our care helps the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals and University of Kansas Jayhawks stay at the top of their games. We also provide the same level of care for high school and middle school athletes at 38 schools across the metro area. As a national leader, we believe it is important to provide the same level of specialized care to female athletes at every level.”

We’ve also identified the unique concerns and injuries that can affect female athletes differently from their male counterparts. That’s why we created the Female Athlete Program in 2022 to look at youth, high school and adult female athletes’ physical, nutritional, physiological and psychological needs while helping them achieve their full athletic potential. We are excited to expand our care for female athletes to the highest level.

“The Current’s focus on women’s sports aligns with the health system’s priority of providing specialized care for female athletes,” said Tammy Peterman, president of the Kansas City Division.

We are thrilled to begin providing care, informed by our expertise, to the Current. In working with these elite athletes, we know we will learn more and be able to conduct research that will benefit women worldwide.

KC BABY!
