BBL® Photorejuvenation

Years of skin damage caused by sun exposure, pollutants, tobacco use or the natural aging process can cause the skin to look dull and feel rough – resulting in a weathered appearance.

As one of the most popular skin enhancement options, the BroadBand Light (BBL®) photofacial is a leading-edge, FDA-approved treatment designed to foster growth of healthy skin cells and provide extensive rejuvenation for vibrant, younger-looking skin. The University of Kansas Health System offers BBL to repair damaged skin, even out skin tone and reinvigorate your entire complexion.

What is BBL photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation is an innovative technology that uses intense pulsed light to reduce the appearance of freckles, age spots, brown spots, broken capillaries, melasma and many other skin concerns. As an application of photorejuvenation, our BBL photofacial treatment uses targeted blasts of high-intensity light to gently heat the upper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and providing a firmer, younger-looking complexion.

We offer a variety of appointment types. Learn more or call 913-588-1227 to schedule now.

Who can have BBL photorejuvenation?

A versatile skin rejuvenation treatment, the BBL photofacial can treat many conditions on the face, chest, hands and/or neck:

  • Acne
  • Freckles
  • Hyperpigmentation, brown spots and age spots
  • Loss of radiance
  • Melasma
  • Rosacea
  • Small facial veins
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Wrinkles and fine lines

If you wish to correct the appearance of one or more of these skin conditions, BBL may be right for you. Our experts can evaluate your complexion during a consultation and develop a personalized treatment plan optimized to correct your concerns.

How does BBL photorejuvenation work?

BBL photofacial is a trusted nonsurgical treatment that can correct a wide range of cosmetic concerns, including wrinkles, redness, uneven pigmentation, broken blood vessels and more. The technology uses controlled, precise pulses of light to destroy damaged skin cells and catalyze the body’s natural healing response.

During treatment, the light energy gently heats the upper layers of the skin to treat hyperpigmentation and foster the growth of new, healthy skin. BBL also firms and tightens the skin in addition to reducing dark spots. It has been proven to change the DNA of aged skin cells and revert them to a younger state.

In modifying the expression of our genes, BBL photofacial can encourage skin cell turnover and increase the number of new cells on the dermis for true rejuvenation that takes place at the cellular level. BBL light therapy comes equipped with postprocedure cooling features and increased safety standards, often resulting in a more comfortable and predictable treatment.

Benefits and risks of BBL photorejuvenation

BroadBand Light therapy is a safe and effective technology for nonsurgical skin rejuvenation. BBL can safely penetrate different skin layers at specific wavelengths to break down pigmentation, treat wrinkles and improve the overall texture and tone of your skin with little downtime.

Risks and side effects of BBL photofacial include temporary redness, swelling or facial flushing. Certain skin types may not benefit from BBL, so it's important to choose an experienced practitioner to accurately evaluate your concerns and recommend the best course of treatment.

What happens during BBL photorejuvenation?

Prior to treatment, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for your BBL photofacial. Your instructions may advise you to limit sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and self-tanners and abstain from certain medications.

Once your BBL session begins, wavelengths of light will be emitted to the treatment areas via a handheld device. Photothermal energy will gently reach different layers of the skin to promote collagen growth as well as minimize broken capillaries and dilated vessels. The absorbed heat energy encourages your skin to produce newer, more youthful, vibrant and healthy-looking skin.

Most people have minimal discomfort during their procedure. However, a topical numbing agent is available for added comfort. Depending on your needs, BBL can take as little as 15 minutes. The number of sessions required to achieve optimal results is typically determined by the size, location, depth, color and overall nature of your skin concerns.
