Medication-Use Safety and Policy PGY1/PGY2 Pharmacy Residency
The University of Kansas Health System offers a 25-month residency program specializing in medication-use safety and policy (MUSP). This program is designed to provide a strong clinical experience and allows residents to play an integral role in ensuring the appropriate, safe and cost-effective use of medications for health system patients.
The first year replicates the health system pharmacy practice PGY1 residency program. The resident will build their clinical skills and knowledge base and will receive a PGY1 residency certificate. The second year will build on the resident’s clinical knowledge by focusing on advanced training in safe medication-use practices and process improvement as a member of an interdisciplinary team focusing on patient safety and formulary management at the health system. The preceptors of this program provide nearly 30 combined years of medication-use safety and policy experience, with 4 preceptors having successfully completed accredited MUSP residencies.
The resident will gain experience in the following methodologies:
- Medication-use safety and policy
- Support of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and subcommittees
- Application of technologies that improve the medication-use process
- Analysis of complex systems to identify and correct system flaws
- Understanding human factors that impact the safety of patient care
- Culture of safety
- Evaluation of evidence-based evaluation of the medical literature
The medication-use safety and policy residency learning experiences
The PGY1 year of the combined MUSP program is mirrored off the pharmacy practice PGY1 residency.
Year 1 required rotations include:
- Orientation
- Acute care general selective
- Acute care specialty selective
- Ambulatory care selective
- Critical care selective
- Medication use, safety and policy
- Pharmacy leadership
- 3 electives
- Clinical research (longitudinal)
- Service commitment (longitudinal)
The PGY2 medication-use safety and policy residency program is tailored to the interests and career goals of each resident.
Year 2 required rotations include:
- Orientation (3-6 weeks)
- Formulary management (4 weeks)
- Advanced formulary management (6 weeks)
- Medication safety (4 weeks)
- Advanced medication safety (7 weeks)
- Automation and technology (4 weeks)
- Quality improvement (6 weeks)
- Research and publication/staffing (longitudinal)
- Practice management/Precepting (longitudinal)
- 2 elective rotations
Elective rotation options include:
- Pharmacy supply chain
- Regulatory and compliance
- Cancer care medication-use safety
- Pharmacy IT
- Pharmacy operations
- Academia
Residency program purpose statement
PGY2 residency programs build upon a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

Staffing requirement
In the first year, the resident will staff approximately every other weekend and one major and two minor holidays in a clinical area. One comp day will be granted each month. In the second year, the resident will be assigned a weekend/holiday crew and will staff approximately every 4th weekend in an operational role.
